Mailbox From Ugly to Pretty

Our mailbox, at our summer home, in Pinetop, AZ was so ugly. My husband insisted, once the snow plow took our our regular mailbox, that we install one that could be swung to the side when we left for the winter. I tried to get Ivy to grow up the post to no avail. This summer, a couple of weeks ago, after finishing a couple of my first mosaic projects I got the idea to mosaic the ugly mailbox. It took me a week to complete it but it was so worth it! :) No longer ugly and we have met several people ,as passerbys admire it, while we are sitting on our deck. I am having so much fun with this new found craft.

I lived up in pinetop many years ago. Loved the beauty of it all. My house is up near Prescott now, but reside in Kansas most of the year. Love your mailbox, I have never done any mozaic but have been wanting to give it a go. Thanks for encouraging me with your so cool mailbox.

I thought the mailbox was lovely, but living in the deep south, I'm more intrigued by a "summer home" that had an encounter with a snow-plow! Can we come visit in August!!

PRETTYNESS!!! I love it!!! I will definitely copy your idea as soon as time permits. I wanted to do something with my plain and boring looking mailbox already. I'm now thinking about putting PEBBLES, or CRAFT FLAT STONES. When done, my mail box will be the JEWEL of the block. THANKS SO MUCH FOR SHARING!!!

That's creative thinking for sure. What a way to make a difference. Does it make the mail carrier smile? I would be smiling everytime I went to get the mail.

What a pretty mailbox! I still haven't found the kind I would like to get and how to do a different kind of post with it. We prefer to have a secured box. You did a great job!!!

I am so new to Homeplace I am not sure where I am supposed to answer questions. I have tried to go to individual sites for some but not sure that is what is correct. I am going to answer Suzanne and Marg's questions here and maybe try to go to their site. If someone knows the correct ettiqute would you let me know. I so appreciate all comments that I get. Thanks!!!

O.K. Suzanne, for outside projects I use Silicone. For inside projects I use Liquid Nails for ...»

the thicker pieces and thin set for the thinner ones so they will all be the same level. If all of the china is the same thickness I use Liquid Nails....Of course, on the mailbox, I used Silicone.

Marg C... It took me about a week to complete the project start to finish. I don't know if you can really tell from the picture but the entire post is covered in mosaic.

The mailbox is beautiful!!! Will have to do this with my box, now to gather up some matariels. Hopefully it will last through our long rainy season in the NW Valley.

Becky, we get heavy snows in Pinetop. I was told using the Silicone will make it hold up. I certainly hope they are right! Good Luck.... It is certainly an addictive craft. Thanks for telling me mine is beautiful!

Nice, but our township insists on large, BRIGHT, easy to read numbers for fire and emergency personnel.

Glad you like it Bonnie. Linda, our numbers are very easy to see on a tree close to the mailbox. Thankfully, we don't have that requirement. I guess I would have made the numbers stand out more and maybe used a different color scheme... like red, yellow and aqua.. For some reason I am into soft colors lately.. maybe I have softened with old age! :)

Very nice! I like the design and the colors. Does this make your mailbox heavy and does it swing to the side like your hubby requested?

Thanks, Sondra. Yes, it swings to the side so when we leave the snow plow won't get it in the winter. I left the very bottom of the post free so it would swing! Thanks for commenting!
