Fall Planting the Thrifty Way

I have a few tricks for how I do landscaping in our yard on the cheap CHEAP! Today I'm sharing my latest switcheroo, which includes three plants doing double duty.
I recently added this cute plant ensemble to my front porch to get it ready for fall. What happened to the plant that was formerly in this container? Check out the full blog post for deets.
Here's a closeup of the front porch plant. Mums in the back, peppers on the right. What is that bright green, leafy plant? And will this survive first frost? Hmmm.
On the back porch, $5 mums took the place of arborvitaes in the planters. Ignore the faded porch posts (as if you can, now). I just power-washed them in preparation for a makeover coming soon. ;)
Finally, the arborvitaes find their permanent home.
Here's a different view of the retaining wall. This part of our property could use some serious landscaping TLC. But I figure I'll take baby steps and do a little bit each year.
