Any ideas as to what to put in these outdoor urns besides plants?

We have to toss the dead plants. Now what? Read more here http://homastyle.com/wp/2012/07/16/any-idea...

I spray painted them white to go with the pots on the balcony.

Urns with small trees last fall. The front porch doesn't get sun and we kept replacing plants. Want to move the urns to the balcony but not sure what to place...

You didn't say what size they were so this may not work, but what about bowling balls covered with flat back marbles, broken mirrors, dishes or even mosaic tiles then grouted?

I l~o~v~e this idea! Bowling balls would fit perfectly. I planned on visiting our local thrift shop this next weekend, I will look for bowling balls. Look for the finished project soon.

Oh good! I'm glad you like it. I can't wait to see them.

Too bad you don't live close because I'd give you a couple of my hubby's many extra bowling balls. He recently admitted it's time to get rid of them.

I'd love to make garden globes, but he doesn't like the idea. Maybe I'll just make a few and place them around the house and see what he thinks of them. He's not good at visualizing so he may actually like them.

Colored glass chunks or balls would look good too! Just don't forget that if there isn't a drainage hole, they will have to be emptied of water if outside.

You can fill the urns with small rocks and then use them to hold decorative limbs. I love dried limbs...with and without bark...but it is difficult to find just the right holder.

@Jeanette S...Hey same name and same spelling! I too like limbs and we live in the forest {plenty of them} so that's a good idea.

@HoopHasIt they do have drainage holes. I noticed the tops maybe to large for a bowling ball, it may sit down too far into the urn.

What about the art Topiaries made out of repurposed vases and such that are being made for the garden...I see them all over the web all of a sudden....you could even put a string of lights in them and light them at night....

At Christmas time you could use a tomato cage and mini white lights to create a tree.

@Linda W, that would be perfect at Christmas time because you could see them on the balcony from the street.

@Sharron W I have seen those topiaries too and think I could do one or two. Color has been a concern on the balcony, everything is black and white and clear glass topiaries would give some sparkle. Wow great Ideas.

We keep rope Christmas lights on all year round on our back deck...they come on at dark It is perfect lighting for us to have some illumination without drawing bugs. I love having them. We even put them inside the front porch. You cannot see them from the street but the porch has a glow but no bugs! Gotta love it!

desperately want a bird bath here...and all I saw was a pottery bowl fitting snugly inside, just deep enough for a bird bath...haha! I just want something unique and haven't found it...so forgive my odd thought!

@ Wendy B My first thought was two birdbaths one for the front and one for the back, but we had concern of the water drawing bugs. We live in a forest and don't even keep our dogs water dish on the porch if his not out there. Sad because I love to watch the birds taking a bath.

I really like the look of the plants by your door. Rosemary is such a hardy plant with not a lot of water. You can keep it shaped and pretty for a long time. If you get them at Christmas time....they are already shaped for you. :)

You could put a tray on the top and fill it with bird seed it would make a very pretty bird feeder.

You could fill them with river rocks and sit votive candles on top when you go out to enjoy a nice cup of tea coffee or a Glass of wine, would be very relaxing on a summer afternoon

Oh I like that idea Deborah Smith! Never even thought of that...I have a gorgeous planter, rather sexy shape to it, that while beautiful is not very suited for plants but the candle idea is about to get tried! Never thought I'd find an answer for my problems under somebody elses question! Thank you!

This idea may not be appropriate for summer decor, but....I have some similar urns and we stack pumpkins in them for a fun Fall decoration. Put the largest pumpkin on the bottom and make sure it's large enough that it doesn't fall inside the urn. Then stack 2-3 more smaller and smaller pumpkins on top. Leave them as is or add lights around or even inside them. Oh, and I love Deborah's river rock and candle idea!

@ Homa if you love the birds and want a birdbath why not turn those into "bubblers" a pump in the bottom and some pipe up to the top...fill with river rocks and add water....as long as the water falls down back into the urn you won't have bug problems...and nothing draws birds like the sound of bubbling water...

@ Sharron W and everyone! Amazed at all the fun and inspiring ideas! I love bubblers we had one in the ground once and our dog took it as his own drinking fountain.

With all the birds we have and as dry as it's been I really like Sharron's idea of bubblers.

What about turning them upside down and placing something on them to use for a large candle holder. I'm talking about those big candles with four or five wicks.
