Just finished my occasional chair today. Went from medium brownish to creamish white. Used Calcium carbonate, plaster of paris and water...all 2 Tbsp. to 2 cups of paint. Used eggshell. Did not need to spray, or add water.. did 3 coats on the upholstery...turned out beautiful. Had about 8 oz. of paint left. As stated in previous info, the chair becomes leathery in feel...but I have a friend who did a chair a few years back,,,and it still looks great..like leather.
I buy Waverly brand at Walmart in the craft department for about $6 a bottle. You have to use lots of water when doing fabric, so two bottles would do these chairs. I spray the entire fabric down with water first from a spray bottle, then paint a thin coat of paint 1/2 paint and 1/2 water. Let dry overnight, do the same with the next coat 1/2 paint and 1/2 water, let dry overnight and one more coat should do it. Then brush wax on - I like the Waverly brand because you brush it on from a bottle not a paste. Here is the before and after of a chair that I recently did...
