Mosaics

I am fairly new to creating mosaic art. I've done the stone, mortar and grout. I would like to start other objects. What adhesive do you recommend? What grout? Also, how do you seal a project? I would like to put something over my work so it can be used outside. Thank you!

  • There are basically two types of adhesives you can use for this work. One is a cement based product called thin set. The other is a mastic type more like a glue. Each has its benefits and draw backs. The mastic works well, but can be messy if you start getting it on your fingers. The thin set is thicker and can be easily cleaned, but you have to mix it and it does not stay useful for very long. So lots of smaller batches are required for a larger project. As far as grout that to has different types. Sanded and non-sanded. The sanded types are used when spaces between the tiles are large. The tiny spaces often found on the 4 inch tiles on bathroom walls is non-sanded. The sand really is just used as a filler and increases its strength between the gaps on the tiles. As far as sealing, any good quality tile sealer works well. Simply wet a rag and wipe it on. A few coats until it beads up on the surface is all that it takes. A helpful hint. Before you grout the tile, wipe the grout sealer on the tile surface. This makes it easier to remove any grout haze that needs to be wiped off as it dries.
