Maple tree pruning

I have a maple tree that I've grown from a seedling. I'm getting ready to put it in the ground and as you can see from the photo it's quite tall and lanky and has leaves all the way down to the dirt. There is only one branch growing off to the side. Can I prune the tree once it's established in the ground? Should I strip the leaves from the bottom up? I don't know what to do with this little guy.

Yes you should remove the leaves going up the trunk. Shaping the tree when it is young is best. Are you sure it is a maple? I cannot zoom in to see what the leaves look like.

Yes, get a good close-up of the leaves. It might be a silver maple, but need more info.
