Fall may be here, but I am still thinking summer. The beaches, sand, water, boating, and sailing. I don't want summer to end! Along with that, I have a dream to own a home on a lake or a beach. I want to live on the water again like I did growing up. It calms my soul, my Mr.'s too. I have been making lots of beachy decor items with the hopes that dream comes true soon. Two weeks ago it was my Mr.’s Birthday. I have been designing a home office for him and I had this idea to make him a gift this year for his birthday. Well it was one of his gifts. I decided he needed something beachy in his office, no idea what but it needed to be kind of masculine too. I wanted it to go well with his leather furniture, his dark wood desk, the bookcases, a few antiques, and not clash with his golf stuff, or his memorabilia collection of nerdy things. He's a software architect, designer, and developer, for the medical profession. He is quite the smarty pants he is!
I was sitting out by our pond a couple of weeks ago watching the goldfish swim thinking about the lake I grew up on and missing what I use to love to do.....sailing! My Mr. loves all the same things I do, and sailing too. I noticed all these stones and rocks with weird shapes, and thought I might paint something on them as I had seen some lately on the internet that were beachy in design. Thought it would be a fun thing to do with the grandchildren. I picked up a couple and took them to the house. Then I had this crazy idea. Two weeks later my stones and a stick with a few other materials, had turned into this! It was the perfect beachy birthday gift for my Mr.! It's a sailboat paper weight! The "SS Jack!"
Not bad for two stones and a stick! I think it looks pretty masculine and looks great on his desk! It has a bit of a rustic old coastal look maybe, kinda sorta. I'm at a loss for the word I'm thinking of.....I do that a lot! It looks really great on his desk with his antique clock that was his mothers and his vintage books. He is a book freak too. And...he loved it!! Nature is just full of surprises....and so is my brain sometimes. Who would have thunk! My Mr. loved it and loved even more the numbers on the sails. They are special dates. He is worse than a woman with that. He remembers and celebrates every special moment we have had in our fourteen years together! I don't even remember them all anymore! On this boat one of those special days is the day we met 14 years ago, the other is his birth date. And of course you have to name your boats.....this one was named after him! You can see more on how I created this crazy idea on the blog. I even share the steps and stuff I used to create the SS Jack. Maybe if your hubby loves the water, beaches, and sailing, he might like something like this in his office too, or his man cave! It may be silly but it came from my heart and it didn't turn out bad at all! A great little project for kids to do for dad for his special days. This was easy and fun to do. It most certainly is unique and it will look great in that beach or lake house that I just know will come soon!
Two stones and a stick and thinking outside the box. I had everything I needed so it didn't cost a thing...I like that. I liked even more when my Mr. said, "oh sweetie that is so cute, I love it!" And he really meant it! He realized right off what the numbers meant, but I did have to tell him it was a paper weight though....but heck it can be used just as a decorative accessory for a beachy home!
