Trying to identify this living thing

This was found by a friend in his yard in Southern California. He says, "Several had appeared growing out of the ground along with some mushrooms and dollup of fungus. No root, just the pointy carrot end was in the ground, it came out with no resistance, like someone stuck it in the ground."
some sort of fungi?

My thoughts are a Fungi-does it smell? I am thinking a Stinkhorn maybe Lysurus mokusin.

I think Rhonda B may be right. I just Googled on Stinkhorn and lots of images - some types look like what you have.
