Side Yard Make Over

We had this side yard that was always filled with leaves. We put up a fence in anticipation of getting a dog and thought we should do something with that area. I had the vision of a large chess set and together we came up with this idea. It will take several months for the grass to fill in and for my husband to make checker pieces. Then it will be a few more years until he can make chess pieces but by then he will be retired and we will have nothing but time.
Preparing the area. After removing all the leaves and branches we leveled the spot and added sanded to help with the leveling of the pavers.
Spacing and leveling the pavers.
Since this area never had grass, we tested the soil and then added the nutrients needed. We then added some miracle grow soil to help the grass seed get started.
Now we just wait.
It didn't take long but we thought it needed something else.
We decided it needed a frame.
Now we wait again. We will give it several months to fill in and then we will add a sitting area and game pieces.

What a delightful area. He has really done a great job and it seems to be coming along really well. Here's some mandatory advice: If you plan to get a dog, put a small restrictive fence to close off this area...maybe from the corner of the house to the wooden fence. Why? Because a dog does not know that it is not his scratching/digging area or pooping area! You all have put in too much work to have it destroyed.

Great idea. If you get a dog, keep it off your grass, especially a female dog as when they urinate they make puddles on the grass and it kills the grass - burns it and you end up with bald patches. They also (male or female) will tend to scratch up your lawn after doing their business. We love our Labrador but she has destroyed our back lawn due to this.
