Unique wood grain

Here is a close-up shot of one of our Live Edge tables. It's a new species of wood we ordered for a project...Spalted Maple...I've never seen anything quite like it, have you?

Funny you bring this up because I just recently heard of Spalted Maple. I had to look it up and wow what a wonderful surprise I had. I think I need to start a folder just for examples of this beautiful wood along with all the other photos of woods I have on my computer. I love wood grain!

It's certainly different from any woods I've seen before and since I'm crazy about wood I've seen quite a few, both native and exotic.

I have never even heard of this wood! I will have to look it up. I look forward to seeing it in different uses and a full view of some pieces! But it is very striking!

Right now, we just used this wood for one of our Live Edge tables. Hopefully, we'll have more requests come in so I can get a few snapshots.

I Image Googled it. Seems it's often used for guitars.

Thanks, Becky...I'll have to forward that to our estimator. He makes his own guitars!

Apparently it is caused by fungi and also attacks other species of trees as well. The trick is knowing when to harvest these trees before the fungus does too much damage and the wood is unusuable!! Very interesting, I'd never heard of this before!!! What an education one can get on HT!!

Thanks Becky, I'll check out your link. I've always loved looking at interesting wood grains and beautifully crafted furniture. I was priviledged to work with some of the best furniture manfacturers and learned to appreciate find wood!!

You're welcome. Isn't Virginia the big furniture capital of the USA?

Actually that distinction used to belong to N.C. although southern Va. near the border used to have several furniture plants until the 90's or whenever everything started being made over seas. Henkel Harris is still located in Winchester, Va. A very old family owned furniture line.

    Beautiful Piece!

Spalted maple is amazing, we have made serving boards and bracelets and napkin rings out of it and my husband has some pieces we are saving for our next table project.I will post the other photos on my hometalk page.

Thanks Becky! I posted the other photos now if you want to check them out.

I also just checked out Brooks Custom's website, they have fantastic ideas, I pined an amazing Zinc range hood to my Pinterest board called details ( here is the link http://pinterest.com/cynthiafweber/)... I think I will need to keep them in mind for upcoming projects!
