Victorian remodel, kitchen of my dreams, sort of...

I laugh when I watch the shows where they spend 60K remodeling the kitchens. Mine was a complete tear out, including taking down a bearing wall, and taking the floor to the joists, and my total spent was less than 20K. A lot of what I added to the kitchen came from Ebay, because I'm a junkie for a good deal, AND I was able to save substantial money and still have everything I wanted. Fixtures, faucets, sinks and cabinets, as well as my supplier for infloor radiant heating, and tile backsplash tiles...nothing retail :) Here's a few before and after shots...

This is the old kitchen, off to the landfill. The former owner's pets absolutely destroyed everything with, you guessed it, urine and feces. It was a disgusting mess!

Low voltage electric infloor heating under slate. The slate works better than tile because natural stone holds heat better and I love the look of it.

We did the same in our kitchen too except we went Tuscan and all we did was change the paint, the wall border, flooring and added a few tuscan electrial coverups, and pictures etc. Very inexpensive to say and EBay had a lot of those things. The cabinets were stained a little darker is all.

Super impressive job. I absolutely love the copper sink. I love "natural" elements. Where did you get the sink?

I like the idea that you stayed with the style of your house. I'm sorry, if I see one more solid white kitchen in a beautiful historic home - I may scream. I can't understand how you can call a modern white kitchen - a renovation to the style of a 1890's home. My 2 cents.

Just in my own observations and tours of historic homes, there were white kitchens.

I love IT, wow what a job you did on that place! What is in the column that juts out into the counter tops is that HV/AC venting? I really love the backsplash and flooring you chose...everything works so well together....

Beautiful job! Our 1899 farmhouse eventually needs a full kitchen tear out - except thankfully we'll get to keep our hardwood floors!

Paula, I so agree! Living in a very historic place, I've looked at hundreds of old houses. There were white kitchens here and there, but it was common to have darker kitchens because many had wood cookstoves and the darker colors hid the soot and smoke that would sometimes darken the walls.

Don't misunderstand, I think your kitchen is beautiful! @Paula, I just meant that because a kitchen might be white in an historic home doesn't mean it's going against the history of that time period. Now if it's done in a modern style, yes, that would look out of place. It would look out of place, no matter the color.

We just moved to a beautiful old house and are in the process of redoing our kitchen. I've heard a lot how people manage to score good deals on ebay for their appliances. My very first experience of buying an appliance on ebay ended up being a total disappointment - I bought a stainless steel range that was depicted on the photograph of the listing and what was delivered was a black rusted range by the same manufacture. My calls to the seller netted a yelling match in which the seller was ...»
extremely rude, making sexist remarks and yelling at me as if I was the one to blame for the confusion. He kept insisting that pictures has nothing to do with the product for sale and description is what counts. Description stated that that was a refurbished cleaned range and did not mention the color. He denied that he had any previous conversation with me regarding the stainless steel range - he called me the day he shipped the range to advise and said that it would need to be waxed. Now I am stuck with a $1500 appliance that is not what I ordered, the seller offered to refund me the cost of the range if I pay the shipping cost sending it back ($500) essentially leaving me 1000$ in hole because of their mistake. My question is did you have to deal with anything like that purchasing items on ebay for your remodel? How did you resolve it, if yes?

A great job, at an even greater price. What some people spend remodeling a room would almost finish paying off my house.

Rita, that doesn't sound at all like the 'ebay' I use...I do always check out the buyer ratings and ebay also has a buyer protection program that is for anyone buying from ebay, so not sure how you fell thru the cracks. Personally I wouldn't buy an appliance on ebay as I like to see what I'm buying and 1500 bucks sounds pretty top of the line...I've seen really good ones for far less. Anytime I've had problems with ebay, I've gone thru the buyer protection program and never had an issue. ...»
You certainly do need to be careful but I don't think your experience is typical of how ebay works, though I hear a lot of these stories.

Terri, I know what you mean! My company redid a deck for a client a few years back and my entire house AND the remodel didn't cost what she spent on her party deck!! lol Thanks for the compliment :)

I appreciate it when I see a sensible redo! With home prices falling everywhere, I do not see how people can justify spending so much money on redos...most of which I see are not needed! I am just thankful that upon retirement, our house is paid for! It is certainly not the fanciest one in town, but it works for us. Just the upkeep runs us thousands every time something goes wrong! Gee!
