Can you use gel stain over paint on wall trim and baseboards?

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Sep 25, 2014Stains work ideally by soaking into the fibers of the wood. Gel stains work the same way. If the wood is painted you may not be able to cover the paint. The only way to tell is to try doing it on a small area that can be hidden until you can try plan B if its not successful. However I do not think you will get the results that your looking for. But again it may end up looking exactly how you want it. Give it a shot. Worse thing is you will need to touch up the paint again.Helpful Reply

Darla on Sep 25, 2014Gel stain over paint will work like a glaze. Gel stain is not really a stain; it stays on top of the wood. It's more like a tinted acrylic varnish. I've seen people use it on primed metal doors to get a wood look, but those doors are textured like wood grain.Helpful Reply
