I'm needing advice on how to insulate my mud/dirt floor basement propriately without causing molding. Should I do foam insulation?

That is something I wanted to do with my house, but I was given a quote of $14,000 plus. My house is 34yrs old and should have been done before house was built...but that is hindsight. Good luck in finding a good product and good workmanship.

Not sure if you're leaving it mud/dirt but I know when we built our home we put down plastic and then sheets of the foam insulation before the concrete was poured....
  • A dirt floor needs to be covered using at least a 6 mil plastic. This plastic needs to be brought up on the wall at least six inches and sealed using an proper sealer that will prevent the plastic from coming off. We use an asphalt product then using nails and a treated 1/2 lumber nail it tight to the wall. Then you can either spray foam or use foam boards on the walls up to the sill. You need to be able to see the sill if your in a termite region as any covering on the walls will prevent proper identification of activity. Then use spray foam in the box plate area with foam boards to fill the bulk up. Fiberglass will work also here but its important to air seal all the gaps where the different boards meet. There is really no need to insulate the floor, just the side walls from below grade to the top.
