Old fire pit turned into flower bed for my succulents.

I used my old fire pit to create this beautiful succulent bed and added a few details to make it interesting. The bear was a toilet brush holder and now it's a place for succulents to grow.

I punched holds in the bottom to ensure proper drainage and added rich dirt. Place under tree because succulents love shade. Also, succulents requires little maintenance.

Lovely, healthy succulents! I love that the bear has moved from one "bowl" to another.

@Mary Carter, Do these stay outdoors all winter? Cause if so I've really been shortchanging myself by not trying to "nurse" things through...LOL

Everyone thank you! I got the purple one from Home Depot but there was no name with the plant. Does anyone know the name?? Yes, these plant will return next year. I will move some of the succulents next year. Just pull them up and put in another pot!!! It's that simple!!! Succulents love shape and water once a week. Good luck everyone that's going to plant them.

I keep all of my hens and chicks out all winter and the snow lays on them and we get some pretty cold temps but in the Spring they come alive!

@Marg, Wow I knew people SAID this....but she's got a lot of other type too...and really I just didn't believe it...LOL do you use potting soil or sand?

Good question Sharron - I wondered the same thing. There is a potting soil that specifically says for succulents - should we use that or what's best?? Can you mix sand w/regular potting soil in a pinch???

I used potting soil but you can use a little sand. I live in northern Maryland, so, that's cold temps in the winter. Also, I have a home in Texas and my succulents there do well too. This is the perfect time of the year to buy succulents because they are on sale. Succulents are so easy to grow and I put them around my other plants as border.

mine are just in the ground and I also use mulch in my gardens. Just regular dirt :)

IF I were using potting soil I would add sand as well....and lots of it. half and half.

also, mine come back whether they are in the ground or in pots :) it doesn't seem to matter.

Sharron... I can't say anything about other succulents because I've only grown chicks and hens so far.

Well I really love how they are spilling over the edges in every picture I see...and frankly it's been so unbearably hot it seems like that's all that will thrive in some of th sunnier spots...
