What is the best way to fix this laminate?

I want to paint this dresser for one of my daughters. It is cherry laminate over mdf, I believe. It has scratches on the top and a few on the sides, which I filled in with wood putty. However, I'm not sure how to fix this split in the wood on the side - I don't know if I should try to squeeze some glue in, but I don't know how I would apply weight/pressure to keep it tight while it dries, or should I take the split part off and fill the resulting gash with wood filler or spackle?
The back of the dresser shows the split in the wood.
slid a piece of paper just so that you can see that it is raised already, not flat.

What you want to do is get some good wood glue and squeeze it into and under the split wood then you want to use some masking tape to hold the piece down. Allow it to cure or dry completely, if any of the glue leaks out wipe it up. When it is dry, you want to take a little wood filler and even out the gouges. Sand and prime, you should be all set to go.

Perfect advice. I have done furniture this way and it has come out beautiful. I wash the cabinet with a degreaser once all the repairs are done and then prime it. Once the primer is dry (I do two coats), you can paint it any color you would like. I also put the date and a little note on the back of it to my child ( as a keepsake).

I use Kilz. Two coats does the trick. When I paint it the color I want, I also paint it twice and depending how it looks, I may do a third coat. It comes out looking professional and beautiful and doesn't scratch because the paint is thick. Also, when you do it this way, the furniture looks as if it always was a painted piece of furniture. It's a little more work but well worth it.
