About Me:

Decorating, gardening, painting old furniture that looks ruined.

Favorite area of home improvement:

The kitchen was hard but worth it. The red diningroom and making cornices for it.

  • This is the first piece of garden art I ever made and it's still my favourite. 2
  • 1. Find an old kitchen colander or metal lamp shade - you'll want holes in it for attaching the wires.
2. Use 16 gauge wire. Wrap around marbles and hang old lamp crystals (fake is fine!) on the ends.
3. Glue on flat-bottom marbles. 1
  • The shimmer of the marbles and crystals looks pretty all year round. 1

Make A Repurposed Garden Chandelier

This garden chandelier is true shabby chic, combining old and elegant to add bling to your garden . It's also my oldest and favourite garden art piece. ...»

It's easy to make.

1. Find an old metal kitchen colander (or metal lamp shade). You want something with holes in it (or you can use a metal drill bit and drill them).

2. Using 16 gauge wire, wrap around marbles and hang crystals from the ends. You could thread transparent beads onto the wire. Pick colours you love.

3. Attach flat-bottom marbles or other decorations on the colander using clear-drying outdoor silicone sealant.

4. Add wire to the top and hang the chandelier outdoors.

TIP: I find crystals at stores like Habitat For Humanity. Check old light fixtures. Lots of the ugly ones from the 1970s and 80s actually have good faux crystals on them. You can also use many of the other lamp parts for more garden art projects.

This Chandelier Is For The Birds

A couple of years ago I purchased two ornate 6- light wrought iron chandeliers at auction sans wiring. The price was fantastic- $20.00 each. I gave one to a friend for a housewarming ...»
gift, and the other one I have kept at the shop in "don't put a price tag on that one, I might keep it" mode. Enter design and DIY inspiration, a six pack of mini terracotta planters from Hobby Lobby, a power drill, and one package of bird seed and a chandelier bird feeder is born.

I found a six pack of mini terracotta planters at Hobby Lobby. The small drainage hole in the bottom of each planter was the right idea but not large enough to fit the bolt. Dave the Builder carefully drilled larger holes to accommodate.

We both agreed it would be better to leave the terracotta pots in their original finish vs. painting to eliminate any potential harm to the birds. The modified pots fit perfectly into the candle cups, and we folded the leaves around the pots to further securing them.

You could have heard Dave the Builder all the way to Canada this morning when we had a hungry guest for breakfast.

Total Costs: Wrought Iron Chandelier: $20.00 6pk. Terracotta Mini Planters: $1.24 Bird seed: $4.00 Birdwatching enjoyment: Priceless

Aqua Distressed Chalkpainted Dresser

I got this big, beat up, smelly dresser off of craigslist. I cleaned it up, painted it with aqua DIY chalkpaint, distressed it, repainted the hardware and coated it in AS clear wax. A couple bought it for their master bedroom.

Turn your stairs into a work of art

When I I ripped off the old stairway carpet, I debated for two long years on what to do with the stairs. The 'old patina' showing up on the stairs from daily wear and tear fired up an ...»
idea... make them look as if they were made from old crates.

So I got to work creating stencils and painted them with craft paint. Adding creative things such as yardsticks for risers just added to the fun.

The stairs fool nearly everyone coming in thinking I spent a FORTUNE on them, when in reality, they were absolutely free.

  • All the rustic bling makes for a fun focal point in the backyard. The white planter box use to be a firetruck parts crate. A couple pallets offer a front step and side walkway. A rusty old vintage headboard became a gate. 9
  • The before. The lovely cow mural was hand painted by a friend, which now is safely in storage until it lands a new location. 4
  • Odds and sods were used to create a door. The wreath is made from canning jar lids. 6

A rustic shed made from reclaimed lumber

A little green house in my backyard received a facelift. The plastic was replaced with repurposed fencing boards captured from another's burn pile, a few barn windows, then the decorating ...»
began. Junky relics were added to create a fun focal point which now houses firewood.

This shed is part of a 4 part series showing the entire build. Lots more to see!

  • Even a small bathroom stands half a chance if you choose your stuff wisely. A ladder for towel storage truly rocks as it takes so little real estate. 2
  • Toilet paper storage at it's junkiest. This simple storage solution went semi viral all over the land. Gotta love when the world knows and loves where you store your toilet paper, huh? (Scotts brand since we're at it) 1
  • Ohhh and then there's my numbered headboard with a ridiculous amount of hooks. They must be broken though because my son still drops everything on the floor. 2
  • You have to see the before. See that vanity?! It took up half the room. Ever try changing in a closet? Wait... a yellowed yellow closet. Yeah. That. 1
  • Here, I knew you'd want a closeup of this creature of beauty. Do you like the open air drawer? Class all the way.
  • I love you big wide open spaces (NON HONKIN' VANITY) bathroom! 3

A bathroom makeover... minus Mr. 'Big Honkin' Vanity'.

I use to detest this bathroom. So much so, that I had the guys throw the big ugly vanity to the curb. It was like a ray of sunshine came down because the room doubled in size and I knew I ...»
could do something cool with it. And the rest is history.
