How to Paint a Nest using Chalky Finish paint and some boards. Great for pallet wood if you like. I used regular pine lumber. Video included in blog post. For a complete tutorial please feel free to click on over to the blog post.
You can make are with all sorts of paint. This was painted with DecoArt's Chalky finish paint and finished with an exterior varathane so it could be hung outside if you wanted. Great for art to hang on your porch!
Attach your boards together to make a custom size. I stained mine a dark color. I used pine planks from the lumber yard. You can find these and even have them cut for you at Home Depot or Lowes if you prefer. The thin strips are 1 x 2s.
I did not get too technical I just chalk out a guideline for the nest. I did not make it a perfect circle but a general shape which was more oval. I used white school chalk. It comes off easily.
Start layering on color for the nest materials. I used Americana Decor Chalky finish paint for this one but you can use craft or artist acrylics too. You can add in colors you may not think would be in a next like greens and blues. This is art, make it unique!
Chalk in the egg shapes in the center of the nest. They don't need to be perfect. It is so much better if you make them have character by being a bit odd. Don't be afraid to go with the flow. If all else fails you can always sand it off and start over.
I used a sky blue color for the eggs. Once you paint the eggs, then add a bit of highlights and shadowing for depth. Add a bit of nest material over the eggs to set them back.
Now sign your work. You have a lovely piece of art for your mantel or wherever you want to hang it.
You can easily add lettering to make this a lovely sign as well.
