What is old tile made of?

I am remodeling my house which was built in 1958. After ripping up the old linoleum I found tile. The kitchen and den have this beige, 8" tile that seems to have been used everywhere by everyone during that time period and beige was the only color. haha! It is coming up in the kitchen and I want to just take it all up before putting something else down. My boyfriend says it has asbestos in it, I don't think so, but I'm not sure. Does anyone out there know about this? I would so appreciate your help and input. Thanks, Sharon

If its the same stuff as you remember in school gyms, halls and classrooms growing up it ASBESTOS TILE..... ...came in many colors,,,,choc. brown and a beige were most common, it had bits of other colors in it ..... it IS considered a HAZ MAT due to that..It was very popular in that era.. Our house (vintage 1949) has the brown in the basement.... that is covered up..

You might be better off just to nail down underlayment on top of it. That's easier than scraping off old tiles and you have a good surface for your new flooring.

Much of the tile from that period does contain asbestos! See this post on House Tweaking about how they removed theirs: http://www.housetweaking.com/2014/08/12/the-master-bathroom/
