Making a guest room for when the kids go to college
-
Hannah V on Oct 07, 2014There's lots of fantastic guest bedroom makeover posts here: http://www.hometalk.com/search/posts?filter=guest+bedroom I'm not sure about the college kid part, but my Mom did this to my room and I actually loved it! She kept a few of my things in the closet and a few framed pictures. That was plenty and it felt like I had a fresh new room when I came back home! Maybe ask them first what they would like to keep and then just go from there! :)Helpful Reply

Cynthia H on Oct 07, 2014I have three grown daughters. Two are married and one lives across the country where she attends graduate school. One bedroom is now my husband's computer room. One bedroom is my sewing/craft room. Bedroom number three is our youngest daughter's bedroom. I cleaned it up (funny how messy they are when they are at home), hung pictures of some of her awards and travels, organized. Her only request was that I not paint her room (she loves the turquoise that she painted it) and that I not use the room for storage (because I have done that before with other bedrooms that were empty). She has a place when she comes home, and we have a guest room. In the future, I'd like to put a full size bed in there (there is a charming daybed in there now). Otherwise, it's a great room!Helpful Reply

Cynthia H on Oct 08, 2014There's just one bed right now. I've debated over adding a trundle bed or going to a full size bed in her room. It's fine for one person right now, but, would be crowded for more than one. My other daughters live nearby, so we rarely have out of town company.Helpful Reply

Opal on Oct 09, 2014Been there. Changing out the bed is no big deal because you are also acknowledging that they are now older and need a larger bed for when they are home because it is more comfortable even for one person. Plus if they have a significant other with them, your set. A full size is only 13-18" wider which my daughter loved. If I had it to do over, I would never have even gotten a twin bed for my kids. Another plus is I have slept there when the hubs snores and it is fabulous. I would leave the rest of her things in the room or if you have/want to, store just her stuff under the bed. She will likely be ready for more change after her first year of college just like mine and most if not all of her friends. My daughter has since graduated college and thinks I should have done it sooner BUT that could be because she doesn't want to live here anymore, which she shouldn't. First year = bed, second year = keepsakes/private stuff stored under the bed. A last thought is to save her twin under the full bed as well so she has something to take with her that is not your guest bed unless you are ok with that. Lost my bed, the dresser, the trunk, and the bookcase, but I do now have a craft studio. good luck, it will be fine.Helpful Reply
