Help restore my solid brass antique lamp

This is an antique lamp that I'm trying to get back in shape to when it was restored about 15 years ago. It's solid brass except when you turn it upside down the plate that weighs it down. However around that it is brass. It reads Spec 306 underneath. If I use brasso what should I clean it with? A sponge? A rag? Or something else? Thanks for the help!

I found an old floor lamp that was covered with several coats of paint, and used a heat gun to remove the paint. Wow, didn't realize until the paint came off that it was brass, but it really glistened! Afterwards, spray aerosol polyurethane to keep it that way. I had removed the wire inside it, by the way.

Thank you, this lamp I'm referring to has been in my family for generations. I bought some brasso today and it's already working. I may take a couple days, but I'm ready!

Have experience getting paint off brass fixtures, and polishing up door hardware, etc. Once you have polished it up to gleaming, spray with Clear Coat (it is found in the auto section of stores). This is what the pros use. You won't have to polish it ever again. Clear Coat is better than aerosol poly which tends to yellow after a while. (I use a chemical stripper to get paint off any of my brass fixtures.)
