Shingles stained with either or both soot and sulfur

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Oct 09, 2014@lucy Stains on roof shingles can vary for the cause. The most common stains is mildew on the roof. In some cases the down drafts on oil fired heating systems as well as poorly running gas systems can push the oily film down onto the roof and stain it as well. The cleaning method is dependent upon the stain that you have. However NEVER use muriatic acid of any type on the roof. The vapors first off that would be released on such a large area could knock you off of roof. There are many companies that specialize in cleaning and power washing roofs. They use chemicals that will not harm the grass, plants, trees and people that surround your home. Oil staining is difficult to remove when you can simply stand next to the stain on the floor so doing it on a roof is extremely difficult as best. If the stain is the result of down drafts on the chimney, regardless of why there was a miss fire and the result was oily discharge (soot) out of the chimney you need to determine if the chimney is high enough and properly sized and constructed for the house. Its not all that uncommon for wind blowing over the roof peak to cause a down draft pushing smoke and byproducts down onto the roof. How many times have you smelled wood burning stoves? Same principal. In any case, Do not believe that the roof can be cleaned really well. It simply will always remained somewhat stained as a result of this carbon spillage. A roof cleaning company can lighten the color, but they will tell you that they cannot promise a like new condition. You could check with your insurance if its really bad. You might have some coverage for this damage.Helpful Reply
