Designing a Built-In for the Bedroom

When we remodeled our master bedroom, one of our main goals was to create space for a TV, which we didn’t have before with the way the room was remodeled. I know that for some, TV’s in the bedroom are taboo, but since we use our master like a family room, a TV was a must! I wanted our built-in to look more like a piece of bedroom furniture and less like a media room cabinet. Working with the cabinet designer, we came up with the idea to make the bottom part look like dresser drawers, so that it felt more appropriate for a bedroom. The top drawers are actually drawers that hold DVDs and CD’s {clearly this is Hubby’s collection}. Hubby’s criteria was that the cabinet house the TV he wanted {that rotates on a swivel arm} and include space for speakers so that he could wire up surround sound. I really wanted a few shelves so that I could display some of my favorite things. Luckily, we were able to do both. Both of my kids want their projects displayed in our room so that their art is the first thing we see when we wake up and they take great pride in finding homes in the cabinet for their latest creations! Ever since we finished up the built-in, we have been much better at keeping organized and I love that all of the wires and components are hidden. I don’t know that I’m quite done styling the shelves – and I know the kids are hoping to add more clay projects to the display – but I love that what is currently displayed is a reflection of our family. This was another step in our effort to create a little paradise for ourselves and our family movie nights!
Drawers at the top keep DVDs and CDs organized.
The bottom “drawers” are actually drawer fronts attached to cabinet doors so that there is ample storage for TV and speaker components. We have a total of four drawers and four cabinets.
The shelving allows me to display a few of my favorite things, like old books...and of course, my kids' clay creations and art projects!
Crystal knobs with a bronze finish complement the chandelier that is in the room.

Can you give us a ballpark price for this beautiful piece? I'd love to have one created, but it may be out of my budget...
