Repurposed and Upcycled Garden

Adventures In Junking

Creative, fun and economical garden containers are everywhere. Like this painted antique copper boiler in my friend Sharon's garden.

or my blanket flower in a candy tin.
an old leather shoe with so many holes I didn't have to drill any
a child's rubber boot
an antique enamelware pot planted with flowers of the same colour as its accent colour
Bushel basket (yeah, I overplanted). 2 days after I planted this I found that lovely little rusted sign (that's real rust, not paint) by the side of the road while walking the dog.
I no longer have this wonderful little ladder planter - each step was built into a planter box. I have to find someone to make me a new one. This photo, clearly, was taken in October, but during the summer this little baby was overflowing with nasturtiums and sweet peas.
This isn't my pedestal sink planter - in 2013 I had 2 matching ones against evenly spaced fence posts and filled them with scarlet red runners. They were so pretty (and edible). I got them both free off Craigslist (sorry I can't find the photos). The trick to preserving your soil is to put a sheet of sheet moss or burlap at the bottom. Otherwise the soil will wash away because the drain hole is so big. I also found that having a pair made them look more elegant and less "junky" - although it's pretty obvious I have no reservations about junkin' up the garden but good!
A customarily indoor wicker planter received numerous coats of exterior paint in my friend Sharon's signature purple.
From Danwithatwist.com comes this suggestion for repurposing a barbeque as a garden planter

I don't think I would have dared paint antique copper!

Me neither, under normal circumstances. We don't know what condition it was in, though. I grew up in the antique industry. My dad, the auctioneer, can barely bring himself to look at a rocking chair I had refinished (I had to have a new spindle turned because one was missing - and so 200 years of black patina (from sitting in front of a fireplace, I'm sure) was stripped because you can't replicate that genuine soot patina. Sharon is my dad's best friend's girlfriend. She's painted her antique washing machine (another planter), baby pram and copper boiler and he never says a peep.
