Change outlet from boxless to boxed?

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Oct 19, 2014This job can be done, but your going to need to add extra wires along with a few junction boxes that you will have access to. NO junction boxes are allowed to be hidden behind finished walls. If this is a ceiling box its not all that hard to do. You will need to: Turn power off and confirm with wire tester. Cut the wires entering into the existing box so the older box can be removed. To remove the older box the two face mounted screws need to be backed out so those plastic tabs in the upper left and lower right corners can swing around flush with the older box. That that time the old fixture will come out of wall/ceiling area. Remove older box, scribe the outline of the new box on ceiling or wall and cut new hole to fit. The new box assuming its staying in exactly the same location as the older won will require both wires to be extended to at least six inches into the new box. In order to do this two splice boxes will need to be installed on the end of both wires. It is there the new splice will take place in order to lengthen the wires long enough so they can be used to extend into the new box by at least six inches. You may be able to pull the wires enough to allow for a safe splice in the new box without having to go the splice method. But because this is a mobile type home it is very doubtful that you will have enough length to accomplish this. They pull the wires tight in an effort to save a few inches of wire which adds up when your building this type of home. In any case once you have spliced the wires into the new junction box(s) you need to install new covers on each splice box followed by installing covers on them as well Then finally install the fixture of your choice.Helpful Reply
