Interior drywall repair

Repairing a 3'x3' piece of drywall in an interior hallway.
*Options I considered for this project:
I thought I was going to have to get a regular sheet of drywall and cut it down to the size I needed, but I discovered a "drywall patch" option that came in the form of a 3'x3' piece of drywall.
*Questions and unexpected events that arose during the project:
I have since discovered that there is a bit or artistry in getting a drywall patch to look seamless on a long flat wall. When I completed my "repair" it was quite obvious that something had been unsuccessfully attempted in the hallway :) This was after several sandings and as much technique as it was within my power to apply. My wife then decided for me that I should employ the services of a skilled contractor.
* Cost Comments:
I spent I think approximately $50 dollars in materials, and then an additional $50 for the contracto
*My motivation to do this project:
There was a hole in the existing drywall.
*Project Steps:
I attempted a self repair and failed miserably. I then hired a contractor to come and fix my mistake.
Advice:
If the repair area is in a high visibility area and you need the work to look as perfect as possible, unless you have previous experience with drywall repair, you are better off just going with a contractor.

A less direct angle where you can see how smooth the finished product is.
