Custom Built-In Shelving

Creative built-in shelving in all sorts of places.
*Options I considered for this project:
I considered going the easy way just, by buying book shelves and just placing them under the stair closet.
*Questions and unexpected events that arose during the project:
When I removed the sheetrock, none of the wood studs were evenly spaced, gee what a surprise, which meant all my shelving required custom lengths.
*My motivation to do this project:
I like to be organized, its the Taurus in me. So I decided to do this project because we needed extra storage space for all our cd's, DVD's and additional office supplies.
*Project Steps:
I removed the sheetrock between the studs on one wall and added custom shelving. The closet was 3'-0 x 3'-0 which allowed for a 12" shelf on the back side still having enough depth for a 2'-0" standard coat closet. I decided to cut an opening in the wall leading to bottom of stairs to see what was behind it. I found lots of extra room. On one wall I added 12" custom shelves, on the other wall I added custom shelves between the studs and pulled in electrical wiring for an outlet. I finished off the closet with sheetrock, mud, paint, light and self adhesive vinyl flooring.
Advice:
Take advantage of services your local hardware store will provide for you. Let's say you don't have a table saw, they will cut pieces of wood the length you need.
Materials:
Sheetrock, Self Adhesive Flooring, Mud, Coat Railing, Melamine, Light, Paint, Plug - $1000.00

You have given me some inspiration. I plan on installing some shelving in the next couple of days. Thanks for the tips. Great job.

That is a great idea! Homes these days don't have much storage. It's so easy for the builder to sheetrock odd angles. Take a peek inside!
