Finished the Basement Steps
*Options I considered for this project:
i considered putting down carpet instead but wood is such a beautiful material i had put forth the effort to bring it to its best possible potential.
*Questions and unexpected events that arose during the project:
Tape allowed the paint from the baseboard to leak on to the step treads. Found a product that got up the latex paint drippings from steps with no difficulty.
Selecting the right color stain for the stair treads
*My motivation to do this project:
Didn't have enough money to have a contractor finish the steps, so we did it ourselves.
*Project Steps:
Sanded down all imperfections on the steps. Stained the steps with a color that was close to the color of the landing.Applied polyurethane. Lightly sanded and applied a second coat of polyurethane. Lightly sanded in between a total of three coats of polyurethane.Primed the baseboards and painted them.
Advice:
Process is time consuming. Just be patient.
Materials:
Minwax Stain - $7.50
Minwax Polyurethane - $7.50
Krud Kutter - $7.00
