I've wanted to make some velvet pumpkins for a while, but I thought it would be fun to make them extra unique and fun for my daughters to help make. While trying to come up with some cute Halloween decor, I came up with the idea of making black cat velvet pumpkins.
These aren't your typical fabric pumpkins - they have ears!
I made these just like you would start a regular fabric pumpkin by cutting out a large circle from some velvet fabric.
I made four triangular cat ear shapes and sewed them right sides together to make cat ears.
Then, I pinned them the ears to the edge of one of the circle halves - about 1 inch from the edges.
I then sewed the halves together by sandwiching the ears between the two fabric pieces (right sides together) and sewing a 1/4" seam.
I continued making the fabric pumpkin by hand sewing a running stitch around the cirlce's edge, and pulling the thread to gather the circle into a pumpkin shape. My 5 year old loved helping me with this part and it was a great way for her to practice hand sewing!
We stuffed the pumpkins half way with rice, and then finished stuffing them with scrap pieces of fabric.
I finished the pumpkins off by inserting a twig into the top and gluing it in place. For our black cat pumpkins, we and tied a piece of twine around the twig's base. We also made some cat pumpkins with a layer of sequin fabric over top of the velvet...
... and some regular ol' velvet pumpkins too finished off with silk leaves. This is a fun craft to do with kids - my daughters loved helping me cut and hand sew. Happy Halloween!
