Do they have a finish? Heard a drop or two of vinegar in the wash water helps. Otherwise, could apply wax and buff. You can still get floor polishers at thrift stores.

Also read one post where the gal used Mop & Glo or such on hardwood.

I read that equal portions vinegar and vegetable oil can work. Sweep first, then apply the mixture with a spray bottle, and mop. I can attest that vinegar does a nice job cleaning. I haven't used the veggie oil, but it's supposed to moisturize the wood. Try a small patch and see how it goes.

When cleaning wood floors you are cleaning the sealer not the wood. The sealer ( it could be polyeurthene, could be wax, it also depends what kind of wood floors you have and also how their made.) If these are standard wood flooring sealed with polyuthene you can use a spray bottle, micro fiber mop and spray the mop and dry. Less water is better. If they need deep cleaning a few drops of PH balanced dish soap ( or the kind that is good for your hands) In a bucket of water, wring out your mop and mop, rinse and dry. Using vinegar with etch the sealer and it will eventually etch your sealer and damage the floor. Using oils like vegetable oil, or Murphy's wood soap is like throwing vegetable oil on the floor. After it dries it starts hazing your finish. If there isn't a shine on your floor it would be helpful to know exactly what kind of wood floors you have. What they have been sealed with and what kind of cleaners you have been using in them. Remember your cleaning the sealer not the wood. The sealer is protecting your expensive investment.

Your wanting a simple answer. There are things you can use to have a temporary shine. Regular floor wax. The kind you out in your floor and let dry. To get the real shine back they needed to be stripped. And the floor wax will have to be reapplied. No simple answers but regular floor wax is a cheap one.

I would try rubbing a small spot with the finest steel wool you can get; that might polish them. If they look OK but dull, you can clean them very well and recoat with oil-based polyurethane. Sounds like your floor varnish is scuffed and maybe wearing out. If water doesn't bead up but soaks in, the floors need to be resealed.

The man who installed my floors advised cleaning thoroughly which Murphys Oil Soap when it's really needed, but in between dusting a with a dry rag mop and Old English. Never walk on floors with bare feet (our oils are bad), or with high heels. The floor was in near perfect condition after 20+ years.

I agree with all those who suggested old fashioned floor was, mine are old and that is exactly what was used many years ago, to polyurathane them would mean removing all that wax first, too much work, sticking with the floor wax, no pun intended.
