Matt and Kelly's deck

I started some work on a new deck project last week, This was the view today...My Office this week...The old deck is painted pine and this side is about 40 feet long and 8 feet wide. Here I have demoed about half and set about 1/3 of the new redwood. It is set over steel "C" beams which are set on "I" beams this is a fully cantilevered deck. The home owner are also going to have a retaining wall built as the soil below this has been waning away.

.

I'll get all of the deck set then start on the railings.

@peace My 8 pounder is down at our cabin...or I would have started with that one. The owners (like me) are big fans of real wood...so they are going with redwood. We are using 100% certified FSC sourced material...so it is the much greener option than some petroleum based composite or plastic deck.

Redwood, nice. Do you need to seal it out there? What is FCS?

Sweet. That looks like it will be a good place to start and end the day singing a John Denver song.

The FSC is the Forestry Stewardship Council, which approves wood from forest that are sustainably managed.

for a less strenuous way to do this, you can use a reciprocating saw ( sawzall) with a metal cutting blade and cut the boltheads off. Just cut between the board and the beam

@peace Planing on using Penofin to oil this deck up when the time come...next week most likely.

Looks like Steve beat me to the FSC answer

@Terry Tried that first...the angle of the sawsall did not allow a clean entry and the decking was quite "tight" to the steel beams.
