DIY fireplace/media console

I've been shopping around for an electric fireplace with the glass embers. I can't find one that has the dimensions I want (actually I did, but it cost an arm and a leg!) so I'm wondering if I can buy a firebox and either build one around it to my liking or better yet - fit it to a refinished piece of furniture that I like. Of course I'm concerned about a fire hazard so I'm a little reluctant to do this. I am going to the local fireplace store and ask but hoping that someone here has made one. Thx

Check out the Duraflame website. I just got one of them from QVC. Beautiful, safe to use on a bookshelf and very affordable ($199) and it gives off heat if you want it. We are very satisfied with it. You can also just go on QVC and enter Duraflame.
