Hardware Rescuer

I refinished a vintage dresser but the neatest thing was the hardware makeover! Rub n' Buff brought this dresser right out of the seventies in about 2 minutes. Groovy.

Look at the nasty before dresser on my post - someone loved gum....

Ahhhhhh - the old ABC gum trick huh? LOL Isn't rub 'n buff wonderful?? I hardly ever hear anybody saying they use it much anymore!! Dresser turned out wonderfully and the Spanish Bronze was perfect for the hardware!!

OOPS - that was copper wasn't it???

Yes. It was the spanish copper color I ordered on a whim a few months back. I had no idea this stuff was so awesome! I may rub it on everything around here.

I've never heard of Rub 'N Buff before. Would it work to refinish a bright brass light fixture to a bronze color?

It would! And it comes in a bunch of different finishes. After I finished this project I order the antique white and pewter online. Furniture hardware can be so expensive it's nice to have a cheap alternative.

Ruth - it's in a teeny little tube - probably not quite as big as a tube of super glue. Ally said she used her finger but I would wear rubber gloves if I were you. Just a tiny bit on a soft rag - like an old tee shirt and start rubbing it on. It dries really quicky too. In all honesty, because the tubes are so small and the last time I checked at a craft store it was around $5 so if your lamps are very big it might be way more economical to use some of the great metal finish spray paints ...»
out there. Then if you want to highlight or accent any specific areas use the R &B on that.

Great tip! Would it work on brass door knobs?

I believe it works on any metal surface. At first it seems like it won't because it's very runny but I just reapplied a little more after a few minutes and then it stuck to the part I'd already done. I've seen projects where people did whole metal light fixtures.

@Susan, I think we both like to get on here right before heading to bed. I do anyway. I've noticed others seem to show up around that time. Of course, I'm addicted so I check in several times a day. Always a good excuse to sit for awhile. I tell my husband, in a very important way, like it's a matter of life or death, "I have to check "NOTIFICATIONS"! Not that he really cares, he just knows that since I've found Hometalk, there's been a lot more projects around here!

Donna - I know exactly what you mean. I've seen the words addictive & obsession used so many times in connection w/HT. It just seems to fill an need in so many of us. You can't wait to get back to see what else has been added. Sometimes the Notificatiolns gets overwhealming - especially if you miss a couple of days. There are times I've been trying to whittle down the list and it's growing while I'm trying to catch up!!
