Trumpet vine (Campsis radicans) is extremely vigorous. You do not need to do a thing to it.

Douglas Hunt@is spot on. Trumpet vines can take it. In fact, we have some near the rear of our house that my husband has been trying, for 3 years, to kill. So far the vines are winning. They're pretty and they are hearty.

They are quite persistent and will take over an area if you don't trim them hard. And, yes, the roots can spread.
