Jackie Gfeller on Oct 26, 2014I use the plastic thistle feeders and they work great, but the seed you see under the feeder is usually the empty seed casing. They often shell the husk off and eat the seed within. They do that with a lot of grains. I don't care for the socks, though, because they do drop a lot! Good luck.Helpful Reply

Bernice H on Oct 26, 2014Thanks for the input. I know the seed is not shells...stinkers, plus the wind whips the sock around and even the plastic feeder. Just touch it and out the seed falls. I have a wheelbarrow with flowers under the tree where the sock and feeder is, and it has a couple of inches of seed too. the feeders are about 5 ft up, a pool would not be very handy I think. plus the seed gets wet !Helpful Reply

Carol Ann McDaniel on Oct 27, 2014I have lots of wind and use a metal feeder I got at tractor supply. It's heaver, has a domed metat top, fine mesh sides and a small dish at the bottom. Works really well. I have it over bare ground and nothing gets down to sprout.Helpful Reply

Jackie Gfeller on Oct 28, 2014Niger Thistle seed is sterilized before it comes into the country, so it shouldn't ever sprout. Millet, though, which is in some mixes will. It is grown here in the states.Helpful Reply
