Our new windows

Last year we put in new windows in our 40 year old house. We chose Quinn Windows in Tucker, GA because they carry the necessary insurance...many contractors do not have Work.Comp....and we were delighted. We even had brick cut down in our den wall to make the window taller! Their work was 100%! Last month we saved 30% on or electric bill and this month-one of the hottest on record for Atlanta-we saved 13%. These figures were taken from our power bill on KW hours used. The good thing is we were much more comfortable this year than ever before. In fact, we used our 110 V A/C units less than last year (if you have an old 2 story house in Atlanta that does not have separated unites, you almost have to have a window unit to cool the house for bedtime)! The brand of window they install is Simonton. We checked out the window manufacturer and the contractor thoroughly before chosing Them! Windows are costly, but water seaping into the walls of your house from rain can be even more costly! Bad roofs, gutters and windows can cause damage and wind up costing big bucks in the long run. This photo shows our new windows!

I love the idea of making sure your workers are going to be covered.

I never hire workers without W/C. What a lot of people do not know is that your homeowners insurance does not cover accidents caused by people being paid to do work. If your brother-in-law is working for free and cuts a hand, your homeowner's ins. pays...but if you are paying people...they are not responsible. Just let a guy fall off a ladder and you could lose everything you own!!!!!

Great new windows and a very informative post Jeannette. Thanks. We rarely pay someone to work on our home, we are big DIYers, but we do have a furnace man that comes now and then to service our heat pumps.

What a lovely porch you have. So colorful and happy looking. Makes me want to come over for a chat.

We are big DIYers too, but as we passed 70, it was time to stop a lot of doing your own work...particularly if your house it three stories high in back (we have a sloping lot). But when you cannot hose down windows because water comes inside, you know it is going own in the wall so you have to do something. And I love being comfortable!

Thanks for sharing your experience, Jeanette. I will probably be replacing the windows on my house later this year, although it will be a horrible expense because they have to be to hurricane code, and Simonton is one of the brands I am considering. Glad to hear of your good experience with them.

Douglas, I have to say that my Contractor was fantastic! Of course I did not have to deal with hurricane code so I did not look at that aspect of windows. I just had to do it to avoid more expensive damage in the future! Good luck!

P.S. Anyone considering windows, be sure and consider getting the entire facing/casing (whatever it is called) covered so all you ever have to do is paint up to the edge of the frame of the window!

That's one thing my hubby will no longer do either Jeannette. We have an area of our high pitched roof that always get hit by the crazy winds we have here and after the first time he repaired it we both agreed that's something we hire out. We have a walk out basement so in the back it's three stories high. The high pitched (Victorian style) roof makes it even more scary.

Because of the above our windows are vinyl clad (high energy efficient, low E, Argon gas ...»

filled double paned) and the house if vinyl sided. No painting and should be no window repairs for as long as we live. The house is just short of nine years old now.

I hate to beg to differ, but this wasn't the hottest Atlanta has seen in a long time. It was actually one of the cooler summers we've had. My electric bill dropped substantially - up to 30% - this year in June, July and August and I haven't had anything changed and am actually working from home this year...

Diana, I did not keep a day to day record, but I do know that Channel 2 reported several days when records were broken...and it stayed hot for a long time! I am sure there were days that were not record breaking, but there certainly were some that were! We have 2 outside thermometers and it was hot! Even a cool summer in Atlanta is Hot! HA!!

Thanks Angie, I love the porch too! Only thing...I did not get to use it much before it got too hot to sit out there...Momma bird in the yellow bird house at the end of the porch threw a fit every time we walked out on the porch, so we left her in peace! Came to the conclusion we would enjoy it in the cool of early fall when it was cooler and birds not nesting! HA!!
