Mildew on wallpaper

Had commodes replaced due to rusted out plumbing. Now I have mildew on walls despite the walls no longer damp. I need help! Any suggestions short of repapering.

  • Assuming we are not talking an exterior wall with vinyl paper... Gently clean with a mildewcide safe for wallpaper & make sure you run your bath vents (which should be venting outside) and you should be fine - shoot you may even want to run a dehumidifier in there for awhile to make sure everything is dried out If it keeps coming back you will need to track down the source of water / moisture. Heads up though, if things got to bad, it could be that the drywall & everything behind it is completely gone & needs to be fixed. Oh & if you have vinyl paper, get rid of it - that is the worst product you can actually use in that climate zone & make sure you check behind it (studs & drywall)
  • Just to add to this, the wall paper cement/glue/paste is like a tasty steak to mold. If you pull the paper off where you see the mold on the surface, you will find all sorts of mold behind the paper. Using wall paper in a bath is one product I would suggest never be done.

Thanks so much for your comments. Wallpaper was in house when I bought it, Apparently leak had been happening for some time. I replaced commodes, that seems to have stopped further damage, will have to deal with what's already there.
