by Brendaly
We recently bought our first home and these drapes came in the master. I love them but don't know how to make the most of them. My husband is threatening to toss them! I want to incorporate the a color from the drapes into the wall. Something that looks good with our mahogany canopy as well. Also any advice on coordinating bedspreads would be awesome. Help! Thank you

How about making a canopy with the drapes over the bed? Check out what @BusyBeeEmily did: http://www.hometalk.com/diy/bedroom/bedroom-ideas-vintage-aqua-european-4206342

If you want to keep them, I suggest just using the side panels and not the valance. It is very formal and stuffy. Use it to make a couple of accent pillows. I'd paint the walls one of the soft greens in the leaves, or a cream if there is one, it's hard to tell from the pic's. For the bedspread, maybe go with a deeper shade of what you paint the walls, the dark green is nice out of the curtains, and then make make a set of shams with a border of the curtain material and at least one other smaller pillow. I love a bed with big pillows and you can have unlimited choices if you make your own. Have fun.

@Brendaly If you do wash them, use cold water, Woolite, and hang them to dry. Woolite will not shrink or fade them.

I agree with loritpets keep the panels and use the fabric from the valance to make pillows for the bed or to cover a foot stool or even a small nap throw if there is enough fabric. You could also save the fabric and find a small chair that had an upholstered seat and recover the seat with the fabric. I would do a cream color on the walls and maybe one wall as an accent wall with a color or a small scale wallpaper that goes with the curtains or even use flat and gloss paint in the same wall color alternately in a stripe ...I would look for a solid color comforter and have fun looking for accent pillows in different fabrics that go with the curtains maybe battenburg lace or stripes plaids florals in same colors.

These drapes were custome made so there is no tag for care and wash. They are pretty thick. Any suggestions on how to wash them? They need it. They feel like they haven't been washed in decades, literally

I agree with Loritpets and paint the room one of the green colors! And use the valance material and make pillow shams for the bed. I would only use the pinks as an accent color, then your bedroom won't look too feminine.

I agree with Loripets. No valance. However, I would use part of the valance and try dipping it in tea, to tone down the pattern. If you like it, dip the panels in the tea. Also, paint the trim around the windows. The natural color fights with the bed color. Natural or green for the bed would be nice. Good luck, happy decorating!

I'm not familiar with tea stained. How do i do that ? I can check online too right?

Well I would take the valance apart and wash it either on delicates cycle in the machine or by hand in lukewarm water in the sink I would use a small amount of mild soap and be gentle.I would line dry not machine dry...See how that goes and then if it all comes out ok do the panels If it doesn't come out ok take them to the dry cleaners.....I like the tea stain idea as well...

It's easy. Just get a few cheap black tea bags and boil a big pot of water and drop in a few tea bags. Let it steep for a while. Throw in the fabric and let it sit until the color you want is achieved. If you decide you like it, you can just throw the tea bags in hot water in the washer! I hope it works out for you! Post a response if you do it so we can see the outcome! I love that you are working with something you already have!

I would use just the side drapes, paint your walls the light green in the drapes, and make pillows for your bed with the valances.....no valances on the windows, please.

You could also get a bed spread/quilt in a solid contrasting color or white from the drapes. now the drapes and throw pillows will be the accents and add color and pattern to your room without dominating it.

There is a light taupe leaf in the material. It would match your furniture and your drapes.

Your husband may not like them because they are a bit fru-fru! Like the idea of tea stain to darken, and getting rid of the valence. If you wash them and they disintegrate or such that may end the matter.

I would take that balance apart and take that fabric and the curtains to the dry cleaner. The curtains are nice. I like those, especially with the type of furniture. I agree with much said here. I would use that valance fabric for accent pieces, like pillows. I don't know why guys have such a problem with pink. We like blue (but in clothes, not on walls---at least for me---and,our bedroom is "baby booty blue"---it's a long ugly story of advice that worked!!) so, what is the deal with pink as accents in a room. And that includes the drapes. I would ask him if a compromise can be reached about the fabric if he picks the color in the fabric that he would like on the walls. (I didn't have fabric, thus the baby booty blue). Tell him you will use the curtains only and the valance will be made into throw pillows. I bet you win here with that deal. Then on to the next room! Mood luck. I love your fabric!!

I agree with losing the valance, but keeping the fabric. The taupe on the walls and accent with the colors in the flowers.

I'd think a sagey green, or even something towards an apple green, depending on your preferences, would be more interesting than taupe. Remember, these days things aren't so matchy-matcha as in the past, so if you're going towards country or cottage, you could use blue on the walls and in other florals bring in more colors. The pale green shadow leaves color for the walls and creamy ivory for the ceiling?
