Marion Nesbitt on Nov 02, 2014Spent untold hours stripping off paint and reclaiming original brass light fixtures and door/window hardware in my 100+ year old home. If you can remove the knob, heat it under hot water so your rubbing compound works better, and dry. I used Brasso, Peek. Then spray with a few coats of Clear Coat (from automotive centers) so you don't have to polish again. This is what a pro told me to use.Helpful Reply

Grouchy on Apr 07, 2015Brasso is what they use in the Navy but be aware that once brass is cleaned up, it will always tarnish so you will have to keep cleaning the tarnish off. That is why they factory coat it with a lacquer or varnish--which always wears off eventually. In the Navy you always have extra personnel for such tasks. Done ot many times!Helpful Reply
