chalk paint has an additional ingredient that makes it stick to the surface better then other paints. You don't have to sand or prep your surface in any way except to clean it. You can make your own chalk paint and it is a lot cheaper. There are many sites that will give you the recipe. I use plaster of paris a little water and a cup of paint and that makes enough to do a large dresser. The other advantage to chalk paint is it is really easy to distress and then you can use dark wax to age it or clear wax. You have to wax it to seal it. I love how easy it is to use. I just finished a large dresser and it had a shiny finish on it. After washing it with TSP I painted it, sanded it to look distressed and then gave it a dark wax. I know use it as my entertainment center. It is beautiful

There are many different kinds of chalk or mineral based paints. I've used many and now love this line so much, we carry in our store. American Paint Company is hands down my favorite to use. Google or go o the website. Our waxes are food grade and no petroleum so yiu can work on your project with no headaches too! APC is non toxic too!

I love Annie Sloan Chalk paint because of the consistency and thickness of the paint, goes on very smooth. I also tried making my own by buying "paint chalk" and added a chalk powder (which I bought on line) to regular latex paint - directions said to use a flat paint versus a gloss or satin. I did not like it as well as AS paint. I enjoy using the AS dark or clear stain as well. AS products a little spendy, but for special projects, worth it in my opinion.

I like chalk paint because it's so easy to use, but I do have one question of my own - I'm not keen on the 'feel' of the item once it's painted with chalk paint. I've seen people using a wax on the furniture once they've painted it - does this give a smooth finish? Thanks.

Interesting, may I ask why? Does it feel gritty, maybe, instead of smooth?
  • Cheryl Cheryl on Nov 04, 2014
Yes, it does feel a trifle gritty before it's been waxed, but much smoother afterward.

@ Pen Chalk Paint needs to have a sealing finish after it's been painted. You can use either wax or a polyurethane. Also I suggest using a very fine grit sandpaper like 600 grit to lightly go over it before sealing. You will have a beautiful smooth finish when it's complete! I sell OLD TOWN PAINTS and it's the best on the market!!

Thank you for answering my question, I really appreciate it. Makes a lot of sense to me - I've heard of wax, but not polyurethane. Will look it up.
