Squirrels eating my banana trees

Help! The squirrels eat the new leaves that are about to unfold. The trees are too big to put any type of chicken wire around. I'm so mad. I bought my house just because of the trees.

You can try to put a motion activated sprinkler around the banana tree, perhaps? @Douglas Hunt do you have any idea on how to keep these squirrels away from the banana trees?

Hmmm. I have banana plants and squirrels and the squirrels have never shown any interest in the banana leaves. I think I would try a scent-based spray, like deer repellent, or a hot-pepper spray that you could put directly on the leaves.

@Douglas- I've tried the cayenne pepper spray but it didn't seem to work for long. I guess I need to continue to spray every couple of days. Last year the squirrles didn't touch them. But this year, they're destroying them.

We are using liquid crab boil dilated in water spray. Seems to be working.... They jump smell, try to nibble and leave. I don't mind spraying them often. First year they have ever done this.

I'll definitely try it this summer if they do it again. The hard winter killed all my plants so I'm starting from scratch growing them again. Thank God they grow fast.
