Update Old Stairs with Painted Pine Treads and New Risers

This is my latest project in my 1979 fixer-upper house. Just finished adding new painted pine stair treads to the existing rough lumber stairs that were under the old carpet. This is a fairly easy project and coming in around $250 for 25 stairs, really cost effective. I couldn't be happier with how they turned out. I'll add a runner down the middle later on.

You and your Dad did a great job on those stairs, and for not much money! I know you can't wait to move in!

What kind of paint did you use on the treads that will last a long time and not get all scratched up? I have dogs who would also use the stairs. I've pulled up my carpet, too, and was going to stain the treads and paint the risers, but your paint looks so nice I might want to do that, instead.

HI, Louise, I used porch and floor paint by Valspar. I'm planning to put down a runner too, so that will help protect the paint.

those look great. Consider tread rugs instead of a runner. I bought mine through a catalog, Improvements. They have a rubber back and stick down just fine. Once a week I pick them up and wash them, No vacuuming on the stairs. Here's a peek of our progress.

Thank you for the suggestion. I sort of have my heart set on a pretty runner!

I put three coats of polyurathene (hope I spelled that correctly!) on my steps and after five years they still look great. It was a bit time consuming. In order to use the stairs, every other step had to alternately coated, but it was well worth the effort.

@Rhoda, I was too until I was tryint to figure out how to keep it in place without nails or screws in the pretty wood. We still have to finish putting the rest of the treads down and then face the risers. We looked at olf fashioned rods across each tread where it meets the risers but that ended up being too $$ for the ones I wanted.
