How do you clean oil from a concrete floor?

I would like to remove some large oil stains from a garage floor. I tried a product called Liquid Magnet with moderate success. Any other suggestions?

  • Although you can remove the oils and grease from the cement, its doubtful you will remove the stain caused by these spills. TSP is one chemical to use, as is Muriatic acid. Both are corrosive but both work find. You need good ventilation when using these chemicals as they will outgas and is not safe to breath. Use a good scrubbing brush and rubber boots and that will remove all that needs to be done before you paint. Assuming that is your goal. Power washing also will work, but it can have a corrosive effect on the surface of the cement. Many cement floor paints for garages come with special cleaning chemicals that you can use to prep the floor for the paint.

A friend used kitty litter to absorb car oil.

Oh @Marion Nesbitt I've heard about the kitty litter tip too! Maybe one day I'll have a garage floor to try it on. And a car of course, lol!
