Need help with what to do with painted rubber counters?

1940's home it had rubber countertops when we moved in! They were dark red (color we loved) but we had to paint over them to try to cover them up! Now after many coats of paint we wonder what can be done that will make a harder surface? We would have to do a total kitchen remodel to replace the counters as the way they put the kitchen together to upper and lower cabinets are glued(weird I know) into them! I just need to know if there is something out there that will adhere and make them hard!? HELP

You can use tile. Simply fasten a wire mesh on the tops and cover with large granite tiles. There is nothing other than covering them that will work.
