Dawn on Sep 06, 2012I recently cleaned the brass handles on my great grandmothers antique dresser and tried everything..Brasso..Tarnex...scrubbing with a stiff brush. Finally soaked them in CLR for a few minutes then scrubbed with steel wool and they look brand newHelpful Reply

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Sep 07, 2012Chemicals used to polish brass, chrome, silver should be avoided if possible. The acid in these chemicals removes the oxidation to brighten up the metal, but also removes some of the plating in the process. The ideal method of fixing these candle sticks is to use a buffing bonnet on a drill or a bench grinder with the proper abrasive polish that comes in a stick form. The reason why your not really having any luck is that most likely the brass lamp has been coated with a clear coating to prevent it from tarnishing to quickly. But an abrasive buffing using fine polish compound will make it look really great once it is done. This job requires some time and effort. Do not expect it to be done in only an hour or two. Depending upon the coating and the drill speed or polisher speed, it may take several hours to complete. Once done and clean, spray a clear lacquer finish to preserve it for a long time.Helpful Reply
