Coffee table makeover (without paint!)

My mom made over her plain ol' pine coffee table with steel wool. It's way less messy and you don't have to buy stain (or paint)!

i have a cruddy dining room table that this may be what I do.....I was going to paint it but I like keeping the wood idea. Would you seal it with mineral oil or is there a wax or something to seal it with?

I used your tutorial to refinish my kitchen table, and I was going to post a picture of it, but I can't get the link to work. Anyway, thanks for the great idea, I love the way it looks!
