I live in the southern U.S. and we do not have "mud rooms" either - but apparently they are alternate entries (as opposed to front door) where kids (and adults) leave their coats, wet boots and other cold-weather gear upon entering the house.

Oh I see, thanks for that ! Suppose if you've walked your dog in bad weather, that's a good reason to have one too!

It is a small entry area usually used to shed boots, coats, etc., Ours is also our laundry area. Comes in handy in bad weather or dirty work times.

I live in the northern US and we have lousy cold winters and people around here don't like to walk in their muddy boots or shoes into the regular part of the house. So there is an area where one can remove shoes and boots, and usually put on slippers or walk around in socks in the house. When you have really cold (sometimes -30 C) weather, the children have scarves, hats, coats, mittens, boots, etc. and if you have three children, the amount of stuff laying around is enormous.
