We are remodeling our 1800's farm house kitchen. What can we do to add features of that area and make it more updated?

Home Repair Tutor on Sep 13, 2012Sue, I recommend adding a nice tile backsplash. Lately I've been thinking of adding chalkboard paint to one wall and using it as a grocery list.Helpful Reply

Wendy Zeimis-Baysa on Sep 14, 2012Lucky you! IMO, be sure to have a farm sink, a few open cabinets and hardware of the era. Colors were simple and different woods/textures.Enjoy your remodeling I wish it were me.Helpful Reply

Jeanette S on Sep 14, 2012Good for you for not putting in a modern kitchen. You can uplift it a lot with a few glass front cabinets, lighting either in or under your cabinets, and if you have room, an island that does not have to match your cabinets, but one that will coordinate with the style...and use some pendant lights that have an antique look--some of the cutest ones are the Edison bulbs in wire basket fixtures! Good luck...post before and after photos!Helpful Reply

Z on Sep 14, 2012Sue, without seeing your kitchen it would be difficult to come up with ideas that could actually work in your home. I'd love to help if you can post some photos please. Maybe telling you what we did in our kitchen will help though. Our home is nine years old, but it's Victorian in style. Our kitchen is modern, but designed in a way that it has a bit of a furnished look. One area has cabinets to the counter giving it a bit a Hoosier feel. Two other areas have brackets underneath the wall cabinets. One with a wooden back slpash and the other tiled, both with a bit of a buffet hutch look. I wish I'd have thought of a farm style sink, but I did not. Maybe someday.Helpful Reply

PaulChau on Nov 03, 2016why not try getting onto pinterest and seeing if you can find any farm house kitchens in there to give you and your husband some inspiration. Not exactly sure what you like so perhaps if you could add some pictures to show roughly what you're looking for....?Helpful Reply
