Cr180 on Nov 15, 2014Here is the recipe I've used numerous times. 3 parts latex paint; 1 part plaster of paris; a little water. Since my projects have not been big pieces, but old mirrors and picture frames, I've purchased the sample size ($3) of Valspar paint from Lowes- they have numerous ones already mixed or you can pick out your own color and have them mix it. Mix the plaster of paris with a little water until smooth, then add to the paint and mix well. Chalk paint dries fast, so don't mix up too much if your doing a large piece. I've used several different colors in layers and then rubbed it down to give it a distressed look and show the lower layers coming through in places. You can then rub it with a clear wax, if you want, although I have not done that. I love the look of chalk paint and it is so easy!!!Helpful Reply

Carol on Nov 16, 2014I use Webster's chalk paint powder. I feel it produces the same results as Annie Sloan but less expensive and you choose your paint color. They also sell all the wax and brushes that you may need!Helpful Reply

Somewhat Quirky on Nov 16, 2014@Fran Taylor Shabby Paints are a water based acrylic paint. They are also supposed to be no prep. They are not anything like Chalk Paint®. I have never used them, but I have used a lot of Paint Couture - which is also a water based acrylic paint. While they are much preferable to working with latex on furniture, I prefer the mineral/clay/chalky paints to the acrylics. I have worked with at least 6 brands of paints that claim to be "chalk" paint. All of which I prefer to acrylics. Chalk Paint® decorative paints by Annie Sloan are my favorites. I feel like her color pallet is the best and the finished product is superior. My second favorite is Masion Blanche. The texture is close and the color pallet is quite good. My third favorite is Powder River Paint. It is equally as nice to work with as the other two and after sanding has a really nice hard finish. I sell some furniture and I would never use homemade chalk paint on an item I sell.Helpful Reply

Lynne on Nov 16, 2014I have discovered chalk paint from Plaid. I really like it. It's a lot like AS but cheaper... it's 5.97 for 8 oz... so 4 jars of it is still just over half of what I paid for AS in Austin area and still way cheaper than the shop I get it from in La. I like their colors, too but I still use my AS wax! I love her wax and haven't found anything like her wax anywhere else. Plaid has a liquid-y wax. I don't want to try that.I've tried Van Gogh and the CC and DIY. I like Annie Sloan and Plaid... the same!Helpful Reply

Deborah Deaton on Nov 16, 2014There are also some new paints that have just been introduced on the market that have acrylic in them that decease the need for excessive sanding and prep time. Also they eliminate the need for adding finishing wax. The new paints are by Country Living Paints and Fusion to name a few of the new ones that have recently come out, and have beautiful soft muted colors.Helpful Reply

Betty on Nov 17, 2014I have used Annie Sloan and also Van Gogh Chalk Paint. No contest - I like the Van Gogh much better than Annie Sloan. The Van Gogh goes on smoother and covers much better. It is easier to sand for a distressed look.Helpful Reply
