Tile (from late 1950's) grout on tub surround is old, moldy, chipped and discolored. I need information on how to remove and replace it.

Clean, clean, clean using bleach and elbow grease. Then you can either fill in with matching or, what I like better is the new grout stains/sealer combo at big box stores. Sold in little bottles. Put on with new firm toothbrush and wipe excess off tile immediately. Changes the whole look of the room. You could pick up a color from the floor, walls, etc. Did an entire kitchen (backsplash, countertops and floor in one day).

Did this just a couple of weeks ago. After trying to clean the grout with a roto zip using a grout blade, (this did not work). Then put new grout on top of the cleaned grout, but the color was too light still. So, we ended up buying grout stain that did a great job. It is a stain/sealer. I wish I just bought the grout stain to begin with. Clean the grout with toothbrush, water and dawn. Works great and the now the stained grout looks great. Good luck!

Barbara and Lynn, Thank you both so much for taking the time to answer my question. I feel like I can get the job done now. I have been getting ready to move into a house with two bathrooms done in lots of tile around 1959. there will be lots of grout cleaning and staining going on!
