Black lace elderberry

I bought a black lace elderberry bush this past spring that is about a foot tall and a foot wide. Is there something I should be doing to protect it during our Iowa winters? Is it too late?

Your plant is hardy through all of zone 4, so I don't think it should have a problem with your winter. I would make sure it is well watered before the ground freezes. You might put chicken wire around the plant if you think there is a chance of rabbits or mice gnawing on the bark. I would say that is the biggest danger it faces.

Give it room to grow.... both high and wide! Mine started out your size and now it is over 6 ft tall and spreads at least 4 feet wide. Much bigger than a shrub. But I must say that it is gorgeous! Develops a nice pink flower too. I haven't done anything special to make it grow... it has a lot of sunlight and is planted near a downspout so it gets a bit of watering that way. I live in Canada and my shrub gets pretty extreme weather but it is thriving!
