Black lace elderberry

Douglas Hunt on Nov 21, 2014Your plant is hardy through all of zone 4, so I don't think it should have a problem with your winter. I would make sure it is well watered before the ground freezes. You might put chicken wire around the plant if you think there is a chance of rabbits or mice gnawing on the bark. I would say that is the biggest danger it faces.Helpful Reply

Karen Pacey on Nov 21, 2014Give it room to grow.... both high and wide! Mine started out your size and now it is over 6 ft tall and spreads at least 4 feet wide. Much bigger than a shrub. But I must say that it is gorgeous! Develops a nice pink flower too. I haven't done anything special to make it grow... it has a lot of sunlight and is planted near a downspout so it gets a bit of watering that way. I live in Canada and my shrub gets pretty extreme weather but it is thriving!Helpful Reply
